staff Sick Leave policy and Retirement Credit
On June 18, 2024, it was announced that changes to the Sick Leave for Staff Policy were approved by the OSU/A&M Board of Regents. One of the policy changes is the ability to use 960 hours of sick leave as one year of credit toward OSU retirement criteria.
The OSU retirement criteria is a minimum age of 62 with at least 10 years of continuous, regular service or at least 25 years of continuous, regular service, regardless of age. Per the updated staff sick leave policy, if an employee is 1) at least age 62 with nine years of continuous, regular service and 960 hours of sick leave, or 2) regardless of age, has 24 years of continuous, regular service and 960 hours of sick leave, they can qualify for OSU retirement. At the time an employee requests to retire, University Human Resources will verify their sick leave balance and make a note on their Electronic Personnel Action Form that qualifications are met.
This policy update applies strictly to the above-mentioned OSU service retirement rules and in no way applies to the Oklahoma Teachers' Retirement System (OTRS), the Alternate Retirement Plan with TIAA, or the Oklahoma Law Enforcement Retirement System (OLERS) retirement plans.
There are no benefits applicable to the retirement plans when using 960 sick leave hours for OSU service. Using 960 sick leave hours toward OSU service will not hinder the ability to also use the same 960 sick leave hours toward OTRS or OLERS retirement. No more than 960 sick leave hours may be used toward the extra year of service with OSU.
Additional information about retiring from OSU is available on hr.okstate.edu. For questions, please call 405-744-5449 or email osu-benefits@okstate.edu.
